By Eithan Dickerman

With the continued advancement both in the field of technology, business and the like, one can infer that, indeed, a lot of things have been changing. One good example would be the abrupt rise of Chinese as one of the languages being learnt by many foreigners. What made them so passionate to learn Chinese, which is in fact considered as one of the hardest languages to be learnt? Well, why shouldn’t they?

Learning Chinese has been the news feature for quite a while. More and more people in various walks of life have been so enticed to learn this language because they have seen the advantages of learning this language to them. Yet, whatever you might have already heard, still learning this language is much easier than what most people assume. To keep you more motivated in learning Chinese, there are primarily three reasons why you should keep that fire burning.

1. China is now considered as one of the fastest emerging global leader in business. Having the second largest economy in the world, China has been making a breath-taking triumph as it reaches its pinnacle of dominating the business world. In fact, China is known as the leader in manufacture as well as the largest consumer market due to its enormous population. Therefore, for those who dream to have a far-reaching success in business, learning Chinese is really a big advantage as you deal with a race who gradually rules the market.

2. China is a country with a bountiful history as well as unique and diverse culture. If you have learned your Asian history well, you could not agree more with that statement. China has a very rich past that anybody can learn from perceptively. It also preserves and sustains its very unique culture which is still passionately practised in the present time. Hence, learning Chinese opens and even widens your horizon to the rich culture of this country. In fact, language is the best manifestation of culture. So, if you learn Chinese, you also gain precious knowledge about their culture and history. Likewise, conversing with the native Chinese speakers welcomes a new door of a unique experience of social interactions which other people may not possibly experience.

3. Chinese is useful in government. We have reached the point in time when global community is heightened. With this, intergovernmental issues and diplomatic concerns are laid down by various nations. Therefore, learning Chinese helps you to grasp wisdom on China’s government and its diplomatic concerns as well.

Indeed, learning Chinese gives you useful list of benefits. On the one hand, you need to have the right attitude and a blend of unrelenting discipline and drive in learning this challenging yet useful language. Once you do this, you will certainly be joining the growing line of proficient Chinese-speaking foreigners who are enjoying the benefits of having learned such a magnificent language.

The Best Way To Learn Chinese Is To Go To China

By Gabriel Stiller

China is one of the cradles of ancient civilization. Its history reverberates even in the present times; its language is spoken by the majority of the world. Nowadays, almost everything is made from China. Being dubbed as the next economic superpower, business is indeed flourishing in the said country. China has etched itself several milestones in businesses, research, sciences, and arts. It is but logical to think about learning the Chinese language as it may be the universal language in the future. With all the marvels to behold, who wouldn’t want to have the opportunity to visit the land of dragons and emperors?

In the modern age of globalization, China has opened it doors to other countries, not only in Asia but also to the Western world. It’s a good thing they offer scholarships to foreign individuals in their reputable universities. If you are very eager to learn Chinese, it is a nice idea to spend some time in the country and enroll in open courses as an exchange student. If you do not intend to stay as long but would want to be fluent in Chinese, search for short-courses on Chinese lessons with just a few clicks of your mouse.

The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in the culture where it originated from. Think of it as a lasting impression with actual relevance in your objective of learning the language. The usual study module includes not only daily Chinese lessons in script and speech, but also visits to historical sites such as visits to temples, Great Wall of China, and even the Forbidden City. Aside from these field trips, you also get to taste authentic Chinese cuisine. As they say, what better way is there to learn a language than to be one with the locals?

Online audio tutorials are available on the net but it lacks the holistic experience of learning Chinese. Sometimes, the online audios are pronounced very slowly, which may be good for beginners, but confusing later when used in actual practice. Simply put, the ones in these websites are not very good examples of how real Chinese conversations go about. Mingling with the locals, talking to native Chinese tutors, and a good cultural overview make a learning trip to China worth your while.

The beauty of the Chinese language lies in its complexity and tonality. It’s not enough that you know the word; it matters how you pronounce it as well. Exercise what you’ve learned by going to the market and see if the grocer understands you. Eat at restaurant downtown and try to read your order from the menu. While in China, go and savor every thing that is perceived by your senses. Listen. Look. Experience. Enjoy. Studying Chinese may very well be one of the toughest in the world but if your lessons are as enjoyable as a trip to China, it will be one heck of a learning experience you’ll never regret.

A Few Ways to Learn Chinese

By Stan Goh

As a foreigner who has no idea whatsoever of how the Chinese language works, have you ever thought of learning it? Do you think it’s possible? Of course, if there’s a will there’s a way.

As long as you are interested, then it is possible to learn the Chinese language. Are you intimated by the thought of learning a foreign language? Well, you are overreacting really. There are lots of ways to learn Chinese and they’re pretty simple too. You won’t believe this, but you will be able to learn Chinese in less than 10 weeks! Learning a new language is no walk in the park. It is true that children learn languages a lot faster than most adults do. This means that you must know how these children learn their languages so that you will learn faster as compared to other people who are also attempting to learn Chinese.

First, you should start speaking in Chinese. It is much easier to learn as compared to writing. Starting a conversation in Chinese is way easier than writing down this whole article in Chinese. Chinese consonants are pretty simple. Chinese tonal quality is pretty different as compared to other languages and that is why some people think that learning it is very difficult. You should also be very careful with your tones in Chinese. A slight difference in tone could give something you said an entirely different meaning. In order for you to learn Chinese fast, be aware of the different tones that are used in the Chinese language.

That is why audio-based courses are a must for those who want to learn Chinese fast. It will help you to become more sensitive to the different tones and pitches that are used in the Chinese language. Try joining a class personally or look for CD-based course on the internet. These courses must be more focused on the spoken aspect of the Chinese language rather than the written. Make sure that the instructors in these courses are native Chinese speakers as well. This method is the best method to learn Chinese fast.

It also pays to make friends with some Chinese people. You can interact with them, giving you an idea of how conversational Chinese goes. They can also correct whenever you are wrong as you can clearly see their different reactions to what you are saying. Pay close attention to how they use their words and how they speak. Soon enough, you will be able to understand them clearly and you will not be at a loss for words. Your first attempt at the Chinese language will make you sound pretty funny at first. It’s just like a Chinese man trying out English for the first time so don’t be ashamed, there is always room for improvement. Practice your conversational skills with close friends before going out to a Chinese community and interacting with the people there. You might say something funny or offensive, so be extra cautious of what you are saying.

I guess you’re probably wondering where you could find Chinese friends. Well, you could develop close relations with Chinese neighbors or the owner of your favorite Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. Follow these tips and I’m sure you’ll be speaking Chinese fluently in no time.

So You Want To Learn Chinese?

By Gabriel Lozen

Now that you have decided to learn a second language, you are on your way to being bilingual…and who knows, in the future, a polyglot. If you want to learn Chinese, you have to brace yourself with the many options that are available. As there are many ways to approach learning Chinese, ask yourself what aspect do you want to study first. Do you want to start with writing Chinese scripts? Would you like to learn simple words and practical conversational phrases? If you have a previous background in Mandarin, then you probably would like to take your learning to another level. Advanced classes may entail mastery of Chinese grammar, song or poem writing, and even business Mandarin.

In any case, if you are really serious about it, you have to invest a part of your time in this endeavor. It will be ideal if you enroll in a nearby language school that offers Mandarin classes, from beginner to advanced level. Being in a group of people may motivate you to learn as you may practice the day’s lessons with fellow classmates. This is especially useful if you are interested in spoken Chinese.

Writing on the other hand will need more effort on your part as Chinese script has varied stylized strokes, combination, and spacing. The Roman alphabet is very far from Chinese characters. In reality, the Chinese language doesn’t have any alphabet but instead uses symbols as characters. Pinyin is systematically used instead to translate Chinese characters to Roman alphabet.

While the mastery of Chinese writing may take some time, you may opt to fast-track your Chinese lessons with common, practical Chinese phrases and sentences. In a day, you can already say the following: “Shi de.” (Yes.); “Nihao ma?” (How are you?); “Ni jiao shen meh mingzi?” (What’s your name?); “Wo hen hao. Xiexie.” (I’m very good. Thank you.). But before you get ahead of yourself, remember that getting your tones right is just as important as familiarizing yourself with the word. The meaning of a word or a phrase may depend a great deal on how you pronounce it. The best thing to do is listen carefully how each word is enunciated.

Your apparent goal-whether you want to start learning the Chinese script first, speaking the language right away, or both-will determine how much time and effort you’ll have to spend in studying them. If you have the luxury of time and money, getting a personalized Chinese tutor is an option. However, if you are just interested in learning Chinese as a leisure pursuit, then the world-wide web has a lot of free lessons to offer. In just a few minutes, you may already learn at least 10 basic words a day. After two weeks of daily study, you may have memorized at least 140 Chinese words. After that, you may start with simple phrases and sentences. It is not that difficult. Consistency coupled with determination can make an intermediate Chinese speaker of you. Now isn’t that encouraging?

By Gabriel Lozen

It’s a fact that a lot of people all over the world are dying to learn a new language, especially the Chinese language.
The first thing you have to do is to make realistic goals when it comes to learning Chinese. We all want to do things fast, but there are some things that you cannot do in day, in a week, or in a month. One of these things is building the Forbidden City. Yes, the Chinese people did not finish the Forbidden City in a week so don’t expect to be a fluent speaker of Chinese in under a week. Be sure to set short and long-term goals that you are sure you can achieve. For example, aim to learn five Chinese words today. After a few days, start learning some new Chinese phrases using those words that you have learned. You’ll be surprised to find out that your phrases will turn into sentences in no time.

Now that you have set goals for yourself, start making a schedule. This has to be a detailed schedule that you can follow easily. You won’t be able to learn Chinese fast if you don’t follow this schedule religiously. Lots of people underestimate the value of practice. Just because they’ve learned how to speak a few words and phrases fluently, doesn’t mean that they can be as good as those who diligently practice speaking Chinese every single day. Make sure to practice every day, even for just 20-30 minutes every day.

The next thing you have to do is to immerse yourself. Immerse yourself in an environment of Chinese-speaking people. You don’t have to travel thousands of miles. Just simply walk down to the nearest Chinese neighborhood and interact with people there like the owner of the Chinese restaurant. Practice the language in your head so that you’ll get used to it.

Also, you have to learn the difficult stuff. Chinese spelling and grammar are entirely different, so it’s a good idea to memorize the really difficult stuff so that you’ll get used to using them.

Lastly, speak Chinese always. One of the best ways to learn Chinese fast is to speak the language always. This is the reason why you cannot simply learn Chinese by reading or listening to audio recordings. There is simply no interaction involved here. It is a good idea to look for online courses on the Chinese language. Make sure that these courses involve interaction. Remember that you cannot learn the Chinese language if you will not learn to speak it.

No other language is spoken as widely around the globe than Chinese. Conservatively speaking, one of every five people worldwide speaks Chinese. Beyond the fact that there are more people speaking Chinese than any other language; it is one of six official languages of the United Nations. Chinese is both used in formal meetings as well as for documentation. With China emerging as a major economic superpower in the last part of the century, Chinese language has begun to make its foray into the developed countries of the West. Claiming an international audience, Chinese is fast becoming one of most popular languages of exchange even on the web.

Chinese language stereotype

One stereotype that the West held about China was that the official language of China is Cantonese. There was a legitimate ground for such misunderstanding. Those earliest Chinese who migrated to other countries were primarily from the Southern coastal provinces like Guangdong (formally known to the West as Canton) where Cantonese was the widely spoken dialect.

After the Great Wars, Asia caught the world’s attention for their economic achievements. Of the Four Asian Tigers, three were Chinese based communities- Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, the other one being the South Korea. Chinese martial arts and culture gained centre stage popularity in the West through Hong Kong and Hollywood based movies like those starring renowned martial artist and cultural icon Bruce Lee.

Mainland China did not expose itself to world until the 1980’s. After a decade-long political turmoil that led to the introduction of reformative policies for a more Western and market-orientated economic system by former statesman Deng Xiaoping in 1979 that China and its culture gradually gained currency among international communities. Mandarin language study and Chinese culture education plays an important role in enabling people to have a correct understanding.

Dialects

“Putonghua”, more commonly Mandarin Chinese is the largest spoken form of Chinese in the Sinitic language family. Cantonese, Wu, Min are other varieties that are widely spoken. Your understanding of this c classification will be helpful in choosing a suitable study abroad Chinese language course. Let’s take a look at the predominant dialects.

Mandarin – was initially referred to as “GuanHua”(官话), or “official standard language” in Chinese. It is the most widely used spoken language, covering the most of northern and southwestern China. 70% of the Chinese people speak Mandarin. Developed from the northern Mandarin, the standard Mandarin or Putonghua used today literally translates into Commonly Used Language. Mandarin Chinese courses are the most popular language programs.

Wu- A type of Chinese that is spoken in provinces of eastern China, like Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai. Marked by its soft, gentle and mild tones the Shanghainese, or Shanghai language is a prominent dialect of this variety.

Min – Another major Chinese variety that is widely spoken by overseas Chinese, especially in the Southeast Asian nations of Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. In China, this language is spoken more in the Southeastern provinces of Fujian and Taiwan. Linguistically speaking, Min is different from other Chinese dialects that have their origin in central China.

Cantonese – Was the best known Chinese dialect in the world for a long time. It was also mistakenly deemed as the official language of China.

Today it is the commonest spoken language for non residential Chinese around the world. In Hong Kong and Macau, two former western colonies it the spoken tongue of the majority. In the wake of the Communist era when China was shutting its door to the world, Hong Kong and Macau became the main windows for the outside world to understand China.

Xiang – Primarily used in Hunan, a central province in China it is a dialect that has been significantly influenced by Mandarin Chinese and losing its uniqueness. The former Chinese chairman Mao Zedong was from Hunan and had a very strong Xiang accent.

Hakka – It is mainly spoken by Hakka people in different regions of Southern China. Together with Cantonese and Min, Hakka is another common Chinese variety among migrant Chinese communities.

As a potential student interested in studying abroad in China, you will come across dialects like; Gan in Jiangxi, Huihua in Anhui, Jin in Shanxi and Pinghua in parts of Guangxi.

It is true that there are more Chinese dialects than we think, because with every main Chinese type there are many other sub-dialects. It will be wise to choose a good place to start your Chinese learning if the thought of study abroad in China has ever come to you mind.

It is true that across China you can find Mandarin schools and universities that provide Chinese language programs, but it does not mean you can just choose randomly from any of them. Language learning environment plays a critical role in the proper acquisition of any particular language and it is no different for Chinese language learning either. Your language prowess will only increase with practicing classroom teaching in real life situations.

Minds Abroad(http://www.mindsabroad.com/) in Kunming is the perfect place for you to study Mandarin Chinese abroad.
